What are the Common Eye Problems?

“The eyes are the windows of the soul.”
-English Proverb

That quotation holds true for describing our eyes as the window of our soul. People can see what we feel through the emotions that can be seen through our eyes. Our eyes are one of the most important organs. Our vision or sight is also important because according to study, 20 percent of our knowledge were acquired through our sight. But despite how important our sense of sight is, many people are still ignorant and careless with their eyes. That is why, according to the studies, almost over half a million of Filipinos were blind, have a visual impairment, and have common eye problems. Arising with the results, cataract has the most number of recorded cases. The cases must have been prevented and treated, but the treatment is not readily available in most rural areas in the country.

Here are the most common eye problems that were experienced by most people, make sure to read and know them, see if you have one.

Cataract

Being the top in recorded cases, cataract proved to be the major cause of blindness not just in the Philippines but also around the world. This eye disorder is described as the clouding of the eye’s lens. This condition of the eye can occur at any age (but most often found in adults or elderly) and most of them were unnoticed because either the person is unaware or mistaken about their condition. The numbers of treated patients are not increasing because many of them are from the rural areas, which the treatment is rarely available.

Glaucoma

Next to cataract, the second most common eye problem experienced by many is the group of disease that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and may result in blindness or vision loss. This only occurs when the pressure of the fluid in our eyes rises. But this could be treated and prevented if you detected it as early as possible. This is classified in two categories; the open-angle and  closed-angle glaucoma.

Open glaucoma is a chronic condition that advances without being noticed. Not until the person loses his/her vision. This disease is also known as the sneak thief of sight. The other type, which is closed-angle glaucoma, occurs suddenly and is painful. The vision degenerates quickly, but because of the pain, patients generally seek medical help before the condition gets worst.

Macular Degeneration

This is another common eye problem but is often detected as people ages. This condition is identified if a person has a problem in seeing objects clearly. The central vision is affected, or what they called it as the macula, which is the part of the eye that allows us to see things clearly and sharply. A person with this condition has difficulty in seeing fine details. This eye problem has two forms, the wet and the dry. But we will discuss it more specifically on the following posts.

This three are the major culprits of vision loss and eye problems in the country. Make sure to have  a regular eye check up to prevent the acquiring of any eye problem. Our eyes are the windows of our soul, one of the most precious organs for the sense of sight. Life is boring when it’s all dark and black. Take care of your eyes properly and enjoy the beauty of what life and the world offer for us to see.

If you have difficulty in your eyes, seek the attention of your ophthalmologist as soon as possible. And if you have eyewear, there is a good source of high-quality eyewear, see http://www.eo-executiveoptical.com/ for more details.
